The Brigham Young University Theatre Ballet will present “Swan Lake” during “Ballet in Concert” Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 30-Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the de Jong Concert Hall. A matinee will be performed Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $15, with a discounted ticket price of $8 for ages 2-11, and are available at byuarts.com/tickets or by calling (801) 422-2981.
The BYU Theatre Ballet dancers will also be featured at a “Prince and Princess” pre-show party for those coming to the performances. Children of all ages are encouraged to meet the dancers and make personal connections before seeing them on stage. The pre-show party will begin at 6:30 p.m. before each evening performance and at 1 p.m. for the Saturday matinee in the Concert Hall lobby area.
Directed by Shani Robison, the BYU Theatre Ballet presents the stunningly beautiful full-length, classical ballet “Swan Lake,” restaged from Marius Petipa’s original choreography and performed to Tchaikovsky’s timeless music. Audience members will enter an enchanted forest where reality fades into fantasy and love has no bounds and overcomes all.
BYU Theatre Ballet has never done the full-length production of “Swan Lake” before this year, previously only focusing on small sections.
“Since becoming the artistic director of this company, my goal has been to present full-length ballets to a community that values family-friendly performances where ballet can be accessible to all ages as it uplifts and inspires all of us to be more forgiving, more loving and more trusting that good will eventually overcome evil,” said Robison.
“Yes, we experience a fantasy-like story with ‘Swan Lake,’ with otherworld characters and interesting twists and turns, but I hope that beyond the physical beauty of the performance, there is something that lingers in our hearts and souls, making our lives more meaningful and hopefully making the world a better place,” she said.
The technical crew includes Suzi Wood as assistant to BYU Theatre Ballet, Michael Bearden as ballet coach, Roger D. Sorenson as acting coach, Benjamin Sanders as production manager, Jennifer Reed as stage manager, Michael Handley as lighting designer; Lara Beene, Sara Coray, Deanne Dewitt, Priscilla Hao, Juliana Hardman, Elise Meiners, Donnette Perkins, Marsha Russell and Mary Jane Wadley as costume designers and creators; Troy Sales as sound designer, Brittney Corbett as assistant stage manager, Mark Ohran as technical designer, Aubrey Burbank as prop designer, Travis Coyne as technical director and Marian Ohran as lighting assistant.
