DVA Grad’s Work Featured in The New York Times

Amanda Jane Jones, a 2009 graduate from the BYU Department of Visual Arts (DVA), is the lead designer for Kinfolk, a quarterly publication that recently received national attention from a review in the New York Times.

Kinfolk, founded in 2011, features collections of ideas from artists, writers, designers, photographers, cooks and others interested in finding new things to make and do. It showcases photography, essays, recipes, interviews, profiles and practical tips–all focused on simple living.

Adrian Pulfer, area coordinator for DVA, was one of Jones’ teachers while she studied at BYU. He noted the success that Jones is having is in large part due to her time as a DVA student.

“Her classes have prepared her well for this,” Pulfer said. He remarked how it’s becoming more difficult to be successful in the magazine industry. “But there is still a vital market for good publications. Amanda and her colleagues know their audience and they provide information the audience wants in a really compelling way.”
