Failing Forward: Exploring the Role of Major Setbacks in a Faith Journey

On December 1, Jessica Zurcher, assistant professor for the BYU School of Communications, will give a lecture for the 2022-23 Faith + Works Lecture Series. Presented by different faculty within the College of Fine Arts and Communications, these lectures feature the intersection of speakers’ religious beliefs and their professions.

Zurcher will discuss a few personal experiences with failure and explain how they helped her progress in both her academic life and her relationship with God.

Personal Biography:

Jessica D. Zurcher, PhD, is a professor in the School of Communications at Brigham Young University. She received a PhD in Communications from the University of Utah (2016), a M.A. in Mass Communications from Brigham Young University (2011), a B.S. from Brigham Young University-Idaho in Theatre and Speech Education, with a minor in English (2008).

Her background is in communications research and theory, children and media, and content messaging. She has consulted with several organizations on how to use research to drive content creation and distribution.

Zurcher has published in several internationally recognized journals, including Computers in Human Behavior, Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking and The Journal of Children and Media.

She has also presented at numerous national and international conferences. Her research interests include issues dealing with new media, education, and family communication. Specifically, her dissertation focused on societal perceptions of adolescent exposure to online pornography and parent-child pornography communication.

In addition to her work in higher education, Zurcher served as an influential educator in secondary education prior to coming to BYU. She instructed students in grades 6-12, developing and implementing curriculum for introductory and advanced theatre, English, film, and public speaking classes. She has taught middle school to graduate-level students and is passionate about teaching.
