Opera Singer Karina Gauvin Works with BYU Music Students in Masterclass

School of Music

BYU music students had the opportunity to receive face-to-face feedback from Karina Gauvin in a masterclass when the acclaimed opera singer visited campus for a performance in the Madsen Recital Hall last month as part of the BRAVO! Concert Series.

“I was elated when I found out Karina Gauvin was coming to BYU,” said Ashley Wright, one of the vocalists who performed for Gauvin. “It was an honor to be asked to participate in the masterclass with her, as she is someone I admire as an artist.”

The participating students took turns singing their rehearsed pieces and working one-on-one with Gauvin in front of an audience of their peers. “I was very nervous while watching the performances of the students who went before me because Ms. Gauvin was obviously expecting a very high level of preparation and refinement,” said student performer Sam Utley.
