BYU ARTS Creative sweeps design awards

June 27, 2017 12:00 AM
Season posters for the 2016-17 BYU Theatre and Media Arts productions have received several top awards at three prestigious competitions. BYU ARTS Creative is no stranger to winning awards. This year their work has garnered several top awards in regional and national competitions. BYU ARTS Creative won the Copper Ingot Award for the third year in a row at the AIGA Salt Lake City 100 Show and received a Grand Gold Award at the national CASE Circle of Excellence Awards. The Salt Lake City chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, hosts the AIGA SLC 100 Show each year. The show is known as Salt Lake City’s “most prestigious juried competition,” with 100 entries selected and judged by nationally recognized judges on “craft, concept, and aesthetic achievement.” BYU ARTS Creative won its third Copper Ingot Award for the BYU Theatre and Media Arts Season Posters. The Copper Ingot Award is presented to the top 10 pieces of the show. BYU also received Merit Awards for the BYU School of Music’s American Piano Quartet Poster, the University Chorale Poster and the BYU Arts 2016-17 Season Brochure. The show put the design team against difficult competition “It’s important to take into consideration that we are going up against design and marketing studios in the region with full-time designers, and we do it with part-time student graphic designers,” said BYU ARTS Creative Art Director, Nick Mendoza. On the national level, the BYU Theatre and Media Arts Season Posters received a Grand Gold Award at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education Circle of Excellence Awards (CASE). After receiving Gold and Grand Gold Awards at the district level, the posters went on to receive 1 of 16 Grand Gold Awards given at the national level. CASE Judges for the BYU season posters noted that the posters had “excellent minimalistic interpretations of season shows” as well as “strong typographical treatment.” Additionally, judges said the poster’s “consistent color palette added immense impact to the overall look and feel.” Sue Cunningham, president and CEO of CASE, said in a news release that the 2017 CASE competition was the most competitive year ever with over 3,364 entries and only 366 awards given. But the awards don’t stop there. The season posters will also be included in the September/October issue of Communications Arts magazine. Mendoza entered BYU ARTS Creative pieces into the Communications Arts 2017 design competition, the “most prestigious competition for creativity in graphic design.” Winners receive “important exposure” in print and digital editions of their magazine and on commarts.com. “It is a great honor to be recognized in these competitions. It validates all the hard work and thought that goes into all the things we produce here at BYU ARTS Creative,” Mendoza said. “It is great that the students get recognition for their work and I hope that our clients can see them as designers and not merely as student workers.” Student collaborators who helped to produce the designs: Andrew Galloway (BFA Graphic Design 2016) BYU Theatre and Media Arts Season Posters Keegan Black (BFA Graphic Design 2017) American Piano Quartet Poster Stephanie McAllister (BFA Graphic Design 2017) University Chorale Poster

The BYU Arts Creative team wins Grand Gold Award and Bronze Award of Excellence from CASE

March 07, 2016 12:00 AM
The BYU Arts Creative team has done it again! Last summer, they won several awards from the 45th Annual Design Competition of the UCDA. On February 26, 2016 they were awarded a Grand Gold Award and a Bronze Award of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII. BYU Arts Creative received the Grand Gold Award in Design and Photography for the Contemporary Dance Theatre Poster created by Nick Mendoza and student designer, Sam Reed. Reed is a senior in the BFA Graphic Design program and had the opportunity to oversee the project from start to finish. “It was great to collaborate with the dance department, Nathan Balser, and photographer, Christopher Peddecord. They are great clients to work with,” Reed said. The Grand Gold Award is only presented to exemplary Awards of Excellence submissions where the gold awards from each category are judged a second time. Mendoza and Reed received one of only six Grand Gold Awards given. “We are grateful to win and be recognized with other prestigious universities such as Berkeley and USC. Sam and I have a great working relationship that has produced some great designs over the years,” Mendoza said. “I have been able to see him grow as a designer and I’m excited for his future.” The team also won a Bronze Award of Excellence in poster design for the Jazz Showcase Poster, designed by a recent graduate, Nicolina Brown. Out of more than 500 entries this year, only 195 gold, silver and bronze winners were selected. BYU Arts Creative consists of a team of students that supports all of BYU Arts productions by preparing the marketing materials, including graphics, posters and programs. Nick Mendoza, creative services manager for BYU Arts, oversees the students and regularly submits their work for awards. Several works from BYU were chosen in various categories. BYU Arts Creative Wins Three Design Awards

August 14, 2015 12:00 AM
BYU Arts Creative recently won three awards in the 45th Annual Design Competition of the University and College Designers Association. Nick Mendoza, creative services manager for BYU Arts, also received a professional development scholarship. The award recognizes his work and funds his attendance this October at the UCDA Conference in Orlando, where the winning designs will be displayed. “I’m really proud of the students,” Mendoza said. “There is some recognition for me as the art director, but what makes my job fulfilling is mentoring them.” The competition attracted over one thousand entries but only gave out 165 awards: seven gold, 15 silver and 143 awards of excellence. BYU Arts Creative received three of those awards: one silver award and two awards of excellence. These awards aren’t just about putting BYU in the national spotlight, Mendoza explained. He submits the designs to competitions primarily to help the student designers gain recognition and get jobs. Many of his students have received internships or full-time design positions due to their experience working at BYU Arts Creative. BYU Arts Creative consists of a team of students that supports all of BYU Arts productions by preparing the marketing materials, including posters and programs. One of the students, Sam Reed, worked on the Contemporary Dance Theatre poster that won a silver award. “It was fun and challenging to try to convey the movement and energy of dance in a poster series,” Reed said. “I spent a lot of time manipulating the images until they felt right and were communicating that movement and energy.” Reed is a senior in the BFA Graphic Design program and is interning with Johnson & Johnson in New York. Andrew Galloway worked on the HFAC 50th season brochure that won an excellence award. He is also a senior in the BFA graphic design program and is interning in New York with a design studio called Thinkso. Alumna Nicolina Brown worked on the Jazz Ensemble poster that also won an excellence award. Brown graduated last April and has since worked as a design intern for Rapt Studio in San Francisco. COVETED COPPER INGOT AWARD PRESENTED TO BYU ARTS PRODUCTION

May 18, 2015 12:00 AM
BYU Arts Creative brought home one of the most sought after awards in the design community Saturday night for their work on the BYU Arts 2014-2015 season brochure. The coveted award, known as the Copper Ingot, was presented to BYU Arts Creative by the Salt Lake City chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). AIGA is the professional associate for design and annual host of the AIGA 100 Show Gala & Benefit, Salt Lake City’s most prestigious juried competition, which honors and showcases the year’s best designs. “This is big for BYU Arts and the College,” said Nick Mendoza, the Creative Services Manager for BYU Arts. “The out of state judges had great things to say about the brochure and were amazed that we were able to put all the event information in the limited space.” Of the 100 pieces selected for presentation at this years Show, only 10 are awarded the Copper Ingot; seven for designers in the professional category and three for designers in the student category. Randall Boothe, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications, praised the work of Mendoza and his student team. “What a wonderful recognition of the amazing work you and your students have put into not only our season brochure, but dozens of additional creative projects throughout this year.” Mendoza was quick to point out that their office would not function and enjoy the same degree of success without the direction of Ken Crossley, BYU Arts Production Marketing Manager, and their student employees: Jeffrey Whitaker, office assistant (BS Exercise Science) Dallin Mansfield, office assistant (Pre-Animation) Nicolina Brown, graphic designer (BFA Graphic Design) Sam Reed, graphic designer (BFA Graphic Design) Brian Collier, graphic designer (BFA Graphic Design) Andrew Galloway, graphic designer (BFA Graphic Design) Hillary Tait, graphic designer (BFA Graphic Design) Stephanie Ottehenning, graphic designer (BA Graphic Design) Ashley Holmes, office assistant (Graduate) To view BYU Arts 2014-2015 award winning season brochure, click here.
