Synthesis returns from tour in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands

BYU’s jazz ensemble, Synthesis, spent three weeks in May 2024 touring Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. During the tour, they performed at jazz festivals, participated in high school clinics, and collaborated with European jazz ensembles.

Synthesis, known for its diverse blend of swing, blues, Latin, and fusion styles, performed seven original pieces written by band members. These personal compositions resonated deeply with audiences across Europe. “It was so fulfilling to see years of work and planning culminate in such an exciting and fulfilling experience for the students,” said the group's director Ben Nichols.

One of the tour highlights was a special performance in Brussels, hosted by the European Union Office and the LDS Church’s International Affairs Office. The band played at a VIP reception attended by political ambassadors from the EU, Africa, and South America. The performance emphasized the importance of bridge-building, with key leaders like Elder Jack Gerard and Sister Jean Bingham speaking with the band afterward.

In addition to festival performances, the group held workshops and collaborated with local musicians in Stuttgart and Bad Bergzabern. One standout moment was their performance at the Trier Jazz Festival, located next to Germany’s oldest cathedral. The group was invited to return next year, marking a successful start to their European outreach.

Nichols said the trip showed the group that the world is full of amazing artists from all walks of life. He and the rest of the band are looking forward to future tours and more opportunities to share light across the world through their musical talents.
