Brigham Young University's School of Music will be the host for the Ninth Annual Utah 'Crosstalk' concert series, an evening of electronic music on the cutting edge, Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Prior to the concert, visiting composer Mark Applebaum, whose work will be featured in this year's performance, will also give a lecture at 3 p.m. in E-400 Harris Fine Arts Center.

Dancing professionally can be an ambiguous and challenging goal for undergraduates, especially in a genre without a defined movement vocabulary or pre-choreographed steps. That’s why BYU’s Division of Contemporary Dance is giving students opportunities in choreographing and performing professional work.

Brigham Young University’s Contemporary Dance Theatre will perform “NOW,” an evening of choreographed performances that will also feature Bebe Miller’s acclaimed work “Prey” Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 27-29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Pardoe Theatre.

The School of Music at Brigham Young University will present guest artist Rex Surany in a bass performance at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the Nelke Theatre on the second level of the Harris Fine Arts Center. His program will include pieces by Bach, Debussy, Kreisler and Franck.

The School of Music at Brigham Young University will present an evening of chamber music performed by faculty members and guest artists from the Sonolumina Ensemble in a concert titled 'An Evening of Music for Clarinet and Strings' Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The recital is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. Faculty artists for the ensemble include BYU's Alexander Woods on the violin and Julie Bevan on the cello. They will be joined by Sonolumina's Russell and Leslie Harlow on the clarinet and viola, respectively, and Rebecca Moench on the violin. The quintet will play selections from Schumann's 'Abendlied,' Tchaikovsky's 'Herbstlied,' Baermann's 'Adagio,' Glazunov's 'Oriental Reverie' and Taneyev's 'Canzona.' After an intermission, they will perform a finale piece by Glazunov titled 'Quatour Slave,' op. 26. The Sonolumina Ensemble is comprised of freelance musicians as well as members of the Utah Symphony. In 2005, the Deseret News reported that the ensemble, formerly known as the Cathedral Chamber Orchestra, played with 'lucidity, fluency and articulate eloquence' and 'wholly lived up to its name.' The group's title is derived from 'sonoluminescence,' a scientific term that refers to the phenomenon of sound that emits light within a liquid. Brigham Young University will host the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in a performance Friday, Jan. 21, titled 'Beethoven's Legacy' at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall at the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Brigham Young University's School of Music will present original compositions by faculty artist Neil Thornock in a recital performed by guest saxophonists from the Upland Chamber Ensemble Friday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The recital is free. Thornock, who is releasing a record of his compositions later this year, will also play the harpsichord and be accompanied by faculty pianist Scott Holden. Pieces include 'All the Goods Are Stolen,' performed by Adam McCord and Paul Tucker on the saxophone with Holden on the piano, and 'Traptalk,' performed by Thornock on the harpsichord with saxophone accompaniment by McCord. 'This is really a retrospective recital of my saxophone music,' said Thornock, adding that pieces for this recital come from commissioned work as far back as 2004. 'A lot of this music is influenced by my perception of American vernacular music, which means that it borrows from jazz and rock — even though it doesn't sound like either of those genres.' Thornock joined the BYU faculty in 2007 after receiving a doctorate in composition from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in 2006. He got his start as an organist and carillonneur at BYU by playing in the Centennial Carillon Bell Tower as a student. He also plays the saxophone, which he describes as one of the quintessential American instruments. His music has been called 'richly scored, moving resonant' by the (Indiana) Herald Times. The Upland Chamber Ensemble was formed by Paul Tucker and Adam McCord at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music in 2003. From saxophone duo and piano to saxophone quartet, the ensemble is committed to performing works from the classical canon as well as premiering new works, such as those by Thornock, in a variety of combinations. Recent engagements include performances at the World Saxophone Congress in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conferences in Athens, Ga., and Columbia, S.C. Brigham Young University's Department of Dance will present 'Waithera,' an original musical by guest performance group Voice of Africa Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre at the Richards Building.

The Brigham Young University Winter Choirfest, originally scheduled at the Provo Tabernacle for Friday, Jan. 28, has been canceled. Tickets will refunded at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office.

Brigham Young University's best singers will compete for the title of 'Singer of the Year' in the School of Music's Young Artists of Voice Competition at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Jan. 11, 13 and 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.
