Christian Smith will present faculty bassoon recital Nov. 9

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty artist Christian Smith will be performing a free bassoon concert Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Smith will begin the performance by playing Jean-Michel Damase's 'Automne' followed by the Sonata No. 1 for Bassoon and Piano by Laurence Lowe. After a brief intermission, he'll perform 'Soliloquy' by Bernard Garfield and Eric Ewazen's 'Mosaics.' During the performance, Smith will be accompanied by Jeffrey Shumway on piano, April Clayton on flute and Ron Brough on marimba. Smith has been teaching at BYU since 1997. In addition to his responsibilities as a bassoon professor, he teaches instrumental conducting, directs the woodwind chamber music program and regularly performs with Orpheus Winds, BYU's renowned faculty quintet. April Clayton to present faculty flute recital Nov. 5

April Clayton, faculty member at Brigham Young University's School of Music, will be performing a flute recital Friday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free. Clayton will be performing works by J.S. Bach, Darius Milhaud, Philip Lasser, Annika Socolofsky, Lili Boulanger and Bohuslav Martinu. She will be accompanied by Lawrence Gee on the piano and Jessica Patchett on the flute. Clayton has been recognized as one of the leading flutists of her generation by Flute Talk magazine and maintains a career as a teacher, soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. She is a member of the Orpheus Winds Quintet and was named principal flute with the Utah Chamber Artists. Clayton has performed across the globe in France, Brazil, New York's Carnegie Hall, London and Moscow. She has also won awards in many national and international competitions, including the Artists' International Competition. Eric Hansen to give BYU faculty recital Oct. 30

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty member Eric Hansen will perform a free concert Saturday, Oct. 30, at 1:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Hansen, an associate professor teaching double bass, will be performing works by Saint-Saens, Sang Tong, Bach, Ungar, G. Bottesini and Piazzolla. The director of BYU's Symphony Orchestra, Hansen is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland-College Park. Professionally, he has been principal bass for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Musik Barock Ensemble, the Talbot Chamber Orchestra, the Great Music West Festival Orchestra and the National Chamber Orchestra in Washington D.C. He performs part time with the Utah Symphony, Ballet West and with L.A. East Studios doing film and television recordings.
