BYU Young Company Premieres New High-Flying Story in Utah
Blast off! This semester, BYU’s Young Company is back with a cosmic production of “The Boy at the Edge of Everything.” This year’s play will take flight at the West Campus Studio Theatre November 8-18, and will then travel to elementary schools and libraries across the state.
“The Boy at the Edge of Everything” is a new story by Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer. The Young Company’s production will be the show’s debut in Utah. The story follows Simon Ives, an overscheduled young boy who just wants to stop and be. Simon is rocketed into space through an unlikely series of events and collides with the lonely boy at the edge of everything, who lives by himself. Curiosity, friendship and imagination ignite when a small boy with big ideas travels all the way to the edge.
Each year since 1975, the Young Company brings a contemporary and a Shakespeare play to local elementary schools, performing for around 10,000 students.
“I am thrilled to be bringing this story about family, friendship and connections to families and young audiences,” said director Rebeca Wallin. “The cast and I have had a blast bringing this magical, science fiction story about a child's modern-day struggles to life.”
In addition to the show, there will be learning activities about space and the show's themes for both pre-show and post-show enrichment, with a “Meet the Company” immediately following each performance. The play is open to all ages but is best suited for children 8 and up.
An ASL interpretation will be available November 16.
