Communications Grad Alyssa Minor: Trusting the Process and the Lord

Graduating Public Relations Student Alyssa Minor Answers Questions About Her Time at BYU

Q: What piece of advice would you give to current students?

Minor: Trust the process! And by that, I really mean trust your Heavenly Father. If you feel uncertain about your future, you are in good company and it doesn’t mean you are on the wrong path. As long as you are putting forth faithful effort, the Lord is guiding your steps, whether you realize it or not, and whether or not your path fits the “typical” timeline of your own or others’ expectations. He really can do more with your submission than you can with your own control!

Q: What was your most inspiring experience at BYU? Why?

Minor: I once joined a group of students from the Ballard Center for Social Impact to participate in a tour of the Latter-day Saint Humanitarian Center from Sharon Eubank. Seeing all of the work being done there was inspiring, but it was Sister Eubank’s message at the end that made this experience so unforgettable for me. She gave such a sincere, humble testimony about the miracles and joy that can come from letting a simple desire to be the Lord’s hands guide your life and invited each one of us to find our own errands from the Lord. Acting on that invitation truly changed my life.

Q: How has the study of communications influenced you spiritually?

Minor: Studying communications has taught me so much about the gift of Christ-like persuasion and strengthened my belief that God uses this gift to bring others to the truths and blessings which He wishes for all of His children to enjoy. I’ve especially felt this as I’ve participated in projects with the Church through the PR Intelligence Lab!

Q: What initially drew you to the world of communications and how has your perspective evolved during your time at BYU?

Minor: Although I was already knee-deep in another major at the time, a friend convinced me to sign up for the Intro to Communications class when I expressed to her my love for writing, design and strategy. When I learned about public relations, I was amazed to find that it was a perfect convergence of creativity with strategy. After joining the program, I discovered that the skills developed in the School of Communications are not only enjoyable, but incredibly powerful! I love discovering more and more about the ability we have as communications professionals to empower people and organizations through strategic storytelling.

Q: What is your favorite BYU vending machine snack?

Minor: I have spent way too much money on G2G protein bars from those machines.

Q: What is your favorite building on campus?

Minor: I feel like a traitor for not saying the Brimhall, but I love sitting in the Life Science Building fourth floor window sills!
