Rhythm, Voice and Jazz Featured in November School of Music Performances
This November, rhythm and jazz feature prominently in BYU School of Music’s performances. The month starts with the global rhythms of gamelan and Panoramic Steel and goes all-American with the Cougar Marching Band. Jazz Voices offers music familiar to many since childhood, while Synthesis presents a special collection of music by Stan Kenton. The music ends with Opera Scenes that are tailored to showcase student voices.

BYU Symphony For Heroes Proved: A Veteran’s Day Celebration with Special Guest Gentri

Veterans Day is right around the corner and what better way to celebrate and honor the United States veterans than through patriotic music. To pay tribute to United States veterans, BYU Wind Symphony, led by Shawn Smith, will perform a patriotic concert with special guest GENTRI. Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi will be speaking at the concert.

BYU’s Percussion Ensemble and Tangents Percussion Quartet present arrangements of contemporary popular genres, experimental music on found instruments. "For this Classical Percussion concert, we will feature a wide variety of engaging works for percussion ensemble including Blake Tyson’s beautifully ethereal "Ceiling Full of Stars," Michael Burritt’s rhythmically curious "Blue Soul," and Edgard Varése’s seminal work, "Ionisation" for 13 percussionists," says Classical Percussion director Matt Coleman.

“The B Minor Mass” is a landmark work in the history of Western music. It showcases the full breadth of Bach’s compositional powers. BYU Singers, Concert Choir, and Baroque Ensemble will perform Missa (Kyrie and Gloria) sections of the work on period instruments.

Jazz Voices and Vocal Jazz Ensemble present a vibrant showcase of kid-friendly jazz tunes under the direction of Hayley Kirkland. "This has been a really fun concert to pull together,” says Kirkland. “You don't realize how much jazz has influenced children's movies and TV until you do a deep dive. We will be performing tunes from ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Sesame Street’, ‘Charlie Brown’ and so many more.
