BYU Music Ensembles Share Their Talents and Hard Work in a Variety of Concerts This March
This March audiences can enjoy stellar performances by BYU’s top ensembles. The School of Music repertoire celebrates the changing of the seasons. Ensembles offer jazz, classical, folk and world music in a celebration of all things Spring.
BYU Philharmonic: Evening of Concertos: Every year, the BYU Philharmonic accompanies the top instrumentalists and singers in the School of Music for one unforgettable evening. “It is such a pleasure giving our students this special opportunity to spotlight their talents,” Director Nathan Haines said. “The level of preparation and playing is remarkable.”

Classical Percussion: Percussion Ensemble + Tangents Quartet: “The Classical Percussion concert will have a variety of percussion ensemble music: intense, beautifully melodic, experimental, groovy, lush and ethereal,” according to Percussion Ensemble director Matt Coleman. He encourages audiences to listen for two particularly noteworthy pieces. Arthur Lipner’s “Treasure Chest” is a new work for a large percussion ensemble. It’s “built stylistically around pop music flare, but is also centered rhythmically in complex syncopation.” Second, Avner Dorman’s “Udacrep Akubrad” is a new quartet arrangement of a Dorman duet. It has “Arabic melodies woven around a marimba trio with a hand-percussion player rounding out the quartet,” Coleman said.

BYU Wind Symphony: BYU Band Festival Featured Concert: The BYU Wind Symphony headlines as part of the annual BYU Concert Band Festival. The festival is a Regional Affiliate of the Music for All National Festival and is presented by Yamaha. It brings high school and junior high school hands together in a non-competitive event that celebrates band music and focuses on education and musical growth.

BYU Singers: Musica Eclectica: The School of Music’s award-winning chamber choir, BYU Singers, is excited to present their final concert of the semester. The concert will showcase the preparations they have made for the 2024 Cork International Choral Festival in Ireland which they will be attending this May.

BYU Mountain Strings and Folk Music Ensembles: The BYU Celtic Ensemble will open for Mountain Strings’ winter semester concert. The Celtic Ensemble and Mountain Strings will delight audiences with music from New York, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas and the Appalachian region as well as music from Denmark, Scotland, Ireland, Ukraine and Canada. The ensembles use a variety of instruments including flute, guitar, fiddle, viola, bass, piano, mandolin, accordion and voice. Mountain Strings director Mark Geslison said, “The Celtic ensemble performs traditional Irish music which is perfect for a concert near St. Patrick’s Day.”

Global Rhythm: Panoramic Steel + Gamelan Bintang Wahyu: Two BYU Music percussion ensembles will take the stage for a night of international music and culture. This concert will feature the music of Trinidad and Tobago played by Panoramic Steel, and the music of Bali played by the gamelan ensemble, Gamelan Bintang Wahyu.

Men’s Chorus and Concert Choir: Join Concert Choir and Men’s Chorus for an evening of sacred music. Concert Choir will begin with a series of sacred motets, featuring works starting in the 1500s and going through today. Men’s Chorus will close the concert with Easter-centric selections. Director Brent Wells said, “The concert will focus on themes of death and resurrection, with an emphasis on Christ.”

Synthesis: Get a sneak peak of the music that Synthesis will be performing on their upcoming tour through Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in this on-campus concert. Synthesis director Benjamin Nichols said, “Come hear them perform repertoire that will be featured on their upcoming album (which will be recorded in April) as well as on their tour through Europe this May.”

Chamber Orchestra: Strum Into Spring: “Strum Into Spring” with Chamber Orchestra and an evening of music by leading American composer Jessie Montgomery. The concert will feature a performance of Franz Schubert’s Fifth Symphony.
