BYU Illustration Student Alyssa Scott was recently awarded grand prize in a Warner Brothers’ art contest held in conjunction with the release of “The Great Gatsby.” The director of the movie, Baz Luhrmann, selected two grand prizewinners to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City and tickets to the film’s premier on May 1. The other grand prizewinner was Anthony Ithurralde, from Salt Lake City.
Alyssa Scott and her husband, Skylar, were flown into New York City on Tuesday, April 30. The next day, the couple and Anthony met Director Baz Luhrmann and enjoyed sharing the red carpet with a few celebrities at the premier of “The Great Gatsby.”
“ talked to us for a while about our art and was incredibly kind and encouraging,” says Alyssa. “He has a fantastic accent! And I think we convinced him that he needs to come to Utah, because obviously that's where the talented artists are.”
At one point during the premier, Alyssa and her husband, Skylar, decided to ask someone to take a picture of them on the red carpet. Skylar approached the nearest woman. But before he could reach the woman, she turned around and he froze. He quickly walked back to where Alyssa was standing. The woman who Skylar had first approached was Martha Stewart.
Since the premier, Alyssa’s artwork, pictured below, has been used to help promote the film.
