Don’t Miss a Beat with the BYU Classical Percussion Concert

The Classical Percussion concert will add top-tier tempos to autumn with a wide-range of songs

The BYU Percussion Ensemble and the Tangents Percussion Quartet will treat audience members with their shared concert on Saturday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be focused around innovative and exhilarating new music directed by both Matt Coleman and Darren Bastian.

Coleman shared more details of what is to come, explaining that the performance will feature “common and new repertoire from the wide spectrum of percussion literature.”

Each musical group will play a variety of pieces. “The Percussion Ensemble portion includes an arrangement of the hymn ‘Because I Have Been Given Much,’ as well as Trevino’s often performed ‘Catching Shadows,’” said Coleman. He continued, “Tangents’ portion includes Miki’s groundbreaking and exciting ‘Marimba Spiritual’ for marimba and percussion trio, featuring Anna Judd on solo marimba.”

While both groups will be highlighted through their own songs, they will also join together for the finale. “The program will end with a combined ensemble performance of local jazz great Jay Lawrence’s ‘El Habañero,’ featuring Jay on vibraphone,” Coleman said.

The groups will perform in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center and is free of charge.
