The experimental music group fEARnoMUSIC will perform the Utah premiere of Brigham Young University faculty composer Steven Ricks’ “Anthology” during a concert on the BYU campus Friday, March 21.
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $6 and can be purchase at the Fine Arts Ticket Office or by calling (801) 422-4322.
In addition to premiering Ricks’ work, the group will perform numbers by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mathew Burtner, Luciano Berio and Osvaldo Golijov.
The group will perform all six movements of Ricks’ “Anthology,” a piece inspired by what the composer calls his “obsession” of four rock bands – Talking Heads, the Pixies, Kate Bush and Radiohead. Each movement is titled after albums, song titles or lyrics from these bands, including “No Fear of Music Here,” “Breathing Exercise,” “Sensual, Exotic Siren,” “All My Ghosts (5, 6, 7 . . .),” “Gigantic Wave of Bossanova” and “Alien Computer.”
“‘Anthology’ reflects my love of rock music and my ongoing attempts to translate the ideas, gestures, sounds and behaviors of that music into my own musical language,” Ricks said. “If you know the music of these artists, you will probably hear some licks you recognize in my piece.”
Now in its 16th season, fEARnoMUSIC is committed to promoting contemporary chamber music, from masters of the 20th century to young composers. The group has been consistently praised for its unusual and innovative programs, offering passionate, humorous performances of the highest artistic quality.
The seven musicians who comprise fEARnoMUSIC are Inés Voglar and Erin Furbee, violin; JoÁ«l Belgique, viola; Adam Esbensen, cello; Mika Sunago and Jeffrey Payne, piano; and Joel Bluestone, percussion. The group will continue its relationship with BYU this spring, when the group will be artists in-residence at the university.
