Musings on a 2-Week Long Trip To Greece: How Sarah Wheeler Was Inspired and Refined as an Artist

During the first two weeks of May in 2024, I joined seven students and four professors to explore Athens and Crete. We visited many museums, historical sights and landscapes to help us not only learn about the history and culture of the area, but also learn about ourselves as artists.
As we studied the work of ancient artists, I was inspired by the various styles and mediums they utilized to express their faith, culture and personalities. We witnessed centuries-old Byzantine icon art and met a modern icon artist who continues the craft. Then, in Minonas, we saw pottery and frescos covered with beautiful patterns and designs featuring ancient Minoans. We also toured the studio of a modern artist who combines old and new techniques to create his own unique style.

Along with these various styles of art, I loved seeing the diverse landscape and architecture in Greece. The bright blue of the water and rich colors of the rocks was so amazing to see in real life. By observing the landscape, ruminating on various forms of artwork and talking with the various artists and teachers, I was able to learn to see and create in new ways.
I experimented with new mediums and sketched without apprehension. My sketches became looser and filled with more expression; I discovered more about myself as an artist, the ways I want to express myself, and my artistic style in Greece. It has impacted all of the art I have made since, and I believe it will continue to impact my art for years to come. More than just my art, I believe this trip has truly impacted me and how I see the world.
