Piano performance graduate Esther Chang shares how an experiential learning opportunity enhanced her time at BYU

This past summer, I had the opportunity to be the front-of-house intern for the Utah Symphony at the 2019 Deer Valley Music Festival. I got to work with a brilliant boss who was always finding creative solutions to problems, such as issues with angry patrons and dealing with rain at the outdoor amphitheater. There are countless minute details that need to be addressed and many performing artists to accommodate. I finally experienced firsthand how complex concert operation is!

The amazing thing was that this experience was possible because of BYU. Two years ago, the School of Music invited David Green, the COO of the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera (USUO) to present at the Oscarson Lecture Series. He gave a thorough presentation on performing arts administration.
