Audiences will be transported into a world of myth, magic and breathtaking visuals when “Song of the North” comes to BYU as part of the BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series.

Created by 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Hamid Rahmanian, “Song of the North is a large-scale cinematic performance that fuses shadow puppetry with projected animation to tell the story of Princess Manijeh, a heroine from ancient Persia. Adapted from “Shahnameh: The Book of Persian Kings,” written more than 1,000 years ago, the tale follows Manijeh as she uses her superhuman strength and intelligence to save her beloved from danger and prevent a devastating war. With handmade puppets, intricate patterns and vibrant digital imagery, the production offers a unique combination of ancient tradition and modern artistry.

“When I first saw this show, I was transfixed,” said Lyndsay Keith, BRAVO! series producer. “The combination of projected animation, shadow puppetry and intricate designs, colors and patterns is incredible and magical. It’s something you have to see in person to truly understand and appreciate fully.”

The performance features an original score by renowned Iranian composers Ramin Torkian and Azam Ali, blending Persian musical traditions with contemporary orchestration to create a rich, atmospheric soundscape. The result is an immersive, family-friendly production — approximately 80 minutes in length — that has toured internationally to critical acclaim.

“This show is both timeless and innovative,” Keith said. “It captures the power of traditional storytelling while presenting it in a way that feels completely fresh and cinematic. It’s a rare opportunity to be transported into another culture’s epic tradition and to walk away feeling like you’ve witnessed something extraordinary.”

“Song of the North” offers BYU audiences a chance to experience a global epic through cutting-edge artistry and music. Tickets are available now at BYU tickets.
