A Powerful Student-Made Documentary Reveals the Roots of BYU’s Unique Mission by Exploring the Life of Karl G. Maeser
Most Brigham Young University students recognize the Maeser Building — but how many know the man behind it? Over the past year, BYU’s School of Communications has taken groups of students across the ocean to Germany and England to create a documentary exploring the life and legacy of Karl G. Maeser.
Because Maeser’s story spans several countries, the documentary highlights his experiences in Germany, England and the United States, all deeply rooted in his religious identity. Melissa Gibbs, news lab director and a professional staff mentor on the documentary, explained how Maeser’s journey was closely intertwined with his faith: “ Karl G. Maeser had to emigrate to England because after he joined the church in Germany he was arrested and forced to choose to either give up his faith or give up his country.”
Dylan Eubank, a student involved in the project, reflected on the profound impact of learning about Maeser’s hardships. “His life was incredibly difficult and tragic, but he turned it around for the better,” Eubank said. “He created an environment where people not only gained an education but also lived by faith.” Maeser exemplifies steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, even when faced with opposition, and the courage to transform one’s life.
The student team also delved into the lasting influence Maeser had on the university and how his vision still resonates with students today. Amy Ortiz, another student who worked on the project, shared her personal connection to Maeser’s story: “In many ways, my story reflects his. I am also an immigrant — I moved to Utah when I was nine years old, and so I see a lot of myself in Maeser’s journey.”
For those unfamiliar with Karl G. Maeser’s life, this documentary offers an insightful introduction. You may discover that you relate to his message of faith-centered education. Gibbs highlighted the unique nature of the institution Maeser helped build, “There are not many places in the world where you can receive an intellectually enriching education supported by a spiritually strengthening one. It is amazing to see how that remains a core pillar of our university.”
Reflecting on the project, Gibbs shared a hope that brings the story full circle: “I hope Maeser would be proud and see the heart that the students put into the documentary. I also hope he would recognize the legacy he created. When he died, BYU was still in its infancy. I do not think he could have imagined what this university would become or how profoundly his work would impact hundreds of thousands of students worldwide.”
