BYU's Orpheus Winds featured in free recital Oct. 14

October 05, 2011 12:00 AM
The Brigham Young University faculty wind quintet Orpheus Winds will perform a free recital Friday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. This concert will begin with 'Two Miniatures' by Vinter. These works paint a picture of two locations in the UK. The second work is Tomasi's 'Cinq Danses Profanes et Sacrees.' These somewhat bizarre yet appealing dance tunes set an appropriate mood for Halloween. Following a ten-minute intermission, the final piece will be 'Quintet' by Mexican-born Zyman, featuring pleasing melodies, intricate rhythmic exchanges and programmatic elements. The quintet features flutist April Clayton, oboist Geralyn Giovannetti, clarinetist Jaren Hinckley, bassoonist Christian Smith and horn player Laurence Lowe. Orpheus Winds is one of the leading woodwind quintets in the Western United States and carries on a 40-year tradition. The ensemble has appeared at many national and international venues, including engagements in Chicago, New York, Beijing and Shanghai. Most recently, the group has performed recitals in Puebla, Mexico, and Salvador, Brazil. For more information, contact Ken Crossley at (801) 422-4398 or ken_crossley@byu.edu. Source: BYU News
