Stories of Women at BYU to Inspire Education for Young Women

February 17, 2015 12:00 AM
When Lora Beth Brown left her job as a BYU professor to become a wife and mother, she never expected that two short years later she would be a widow with four step sons, a baby and one on the way. Surely no one would fault Brown for hiding from the world, which she did for a while. Some how in the midst of her grief, Brown remembered her love of teaching and education, which started her back on the path toward BYU. “I had to make a decision to say ‘ok the adventure continues.’ Even now I’ll say, ‘go for the adventure,’” said Brown, a professor of nutrition, dietetics and food science. Accepting life as an adventure and education as part of that adventure is not always an easy decision when faced with the realities of life. But a group of women at BYU want to show that the path of education is always possible. A new web series, “By Study, By Faith,” produced by BYU Theatre and Media Arts Department in association with the BYU Faculty Women’s Association, features 10 women who work at BYU and how the pursuit of learning has influenced and shaped their lives. In addition to Brown, the women interviewed for the web series are mostly faculty members from a variety of departments and disciplines: History Associate Professor Jenny Pulsipher, Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Julie Crockett, Microbiology and Molecular Biology Assistant Professor Julianne Grose, Sociology Department Professor Renata Forste, Ancient Scripture Professor Camille Fronk Olson, University Spokesperson and Assistant to the President Carri Jenkins, McKay School of Education Professor Roni Jo Draper, Health Science Assistant Professor Chantel Sloan and School of Music Professor April Clayton. You Can Move Forward The BYU Faculty Women’s Association, an organization for female faculty dedicated to promoting a sense of community and supporting women to be successful in their work, wanted to create a way to encourage female students at BYU to finish their schooling. “There are several types of challenges such as health, family roles, academic difficulties, resources, and personal needs. Sometimes circumstances imply, ‘you can’t move forward,’ and I wanted to be the voice that said, ‘you can move forward and there are wonderful women here at BYU who can inspire you,’” said Faculty Women’s Association President and Associate Professor in the McKay School of Education Barbara Smith. Smith and the Faculty Women’s Association wanted to contribute to creating an understanding that every effort to gain an education will be beneficial to you and to others. There is no particular path or timeline, and there are countless ways to get there, Smith said. In addition to the 10 films, FWA wrote 25 print stories on more inspiring faculty women on campus. They are available on the website. Everyone Has a Purpose Starting with an idea tell the stories of the women at BYU that might be inspirational to students, Smith went to Executive Producers and Faculty Mentors Amy Jensen and Tom Lefler to ask for help to tell those stories in a compelling way. Jensen jumped at the chance to involve some of the very talented female film students on campus in this project. Nine students were able to direct, produce and edit the project. In a way, says Jensen, those filmmakers are much as part of the project as the women featured in the web series. “The students were the conceptualizers, they were the ones who looked at the footage we took of each women and determined what story would be best to tell,” she said. The students couldn’t help but be inspired in the process; one student even decided to apply for grad school because of the influence of the women in the project. “When I began working on this project, I was looking for this kind of mentoring and I didn’t know how to express that,” said Director and Editor Coco Mack, “And I realized that I could do more than I imagined myself doing. And I was able to find the counsel and courage that I needed through these videos.” The filmmakers easily caught the vision of the project set out by the Faculty Women’s Association and the Department of Theatre and Media Arts: to teach young women how to navigate their lives around continuing education, and how their community can help them get there. “It’s a really important story that needs to be told,” said Director and Producer Cassie Hiatt. “Heavenly Father does not forget about you, and everyone is on this earth for a specific purpose.” Stories that Could Change Lives Everyone involved in the filming hopes that this message will be conveyed through the project. And that many will be inspired and influenced by the stories. “It’s all about the sharing. I hope that faculty and employees will share these videos with their students who really need to hear these stories so they can start thinking about what their path is going to be,” said Jenny Pulsipher, this associate professor in History featured in the series. “I hope that a lot of people hear these stories, because it could change their lives.” Health Science Assistant Professor Chantal Sloan agrees. “People need to hear this, because it can answer questions of the heart,” she said. The films and stories can be viewed at bystudybyfaith.byu.edu. /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Carri-1.jpg /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Julie-1.png /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Julianne-1.png /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Jenny-1.png /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Chantel-2.png /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/April-3.jpg /wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Lora-Beth-1.png Source: BYU News

EMERITUS PROFESSOR'S LEGACY ENCAPSULATED WITH TYA/USA AWARD

February 09, 2015 12:00 AM
Having first “entered to learn” over 60 years ago, Brigham Young University (BYU) graduate and emeritus Professor Dr. Harold Oaks has pioneered a charge that reflects “going forth to serve.” Theatre for Young Audiences/USA (TYA/USA) has recently announced the creation of an annual award honoring significant contributions by individuals and organizations in the Theatre for Young Audiences field in the US; and BYU graduate and emeritus Professor of Theatre, Dr. Harold Oaks, has been chosen as the namesake. “It is unusual for this organization to have such an award as many were fearful of the organization becoming solely about that. It was only after lots of discussion that the board decided on it being the right thing to do,” said Dr. Oaks. “For them to choose my name to be associated with the award is truly humbling.” Karen Sharp, Executive Director of the TYA/USA board has this to say in a TYA Today article on the creation of the Harold Oaks Award: “There were several on the board who really saw the value in honoring an organization and an individual who have impacted our field. After lots and lots of discussion we settled on it being the right thing to do and on Harold Oaks being the right namesake.” Dr. Oaks has attended BYU as a student or faculty member for a total of 38 years. His love for theatre and teaching are underscored by his time as a professor and department chair in the Theatre and Media Arts (1980-1993) and as Associate Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications (2000-2002). He credits his time at BYU with giving him the skills necessary to excel after graduation. “I had some outstanding teachers who set an example of excellence in the field. From them, my life view was broadened so that I could better interact and respond in the real world. I also learned how secular knowledge and the gospel can be used together to strengthen testimonies and bless lives,” said Oaks. “The greatest advantage regarding a BYU education is being able to discuss the relationship of gospel knowledge with students in the classroom and in personal contact discussions.” Much of Dr. Oaks’ life’s work has been devoted to promoting the power of professional theatre for young audiences. He attributes his passion for teaching youth with an experience that he had shortly after taking over the BYU Child Drama program. “I woke up early one morning impressed to look up all the references about children in the scriptures. That was a life changing experience! The Lord loves children. One cannot read the accounts of His blessing the children without feeling that powerful love! It is a privilege and a blessing to work with and for children,” said Dr. Oaks. “I have always felt BYU should lead the world in blessing the lives of children with both drama and theatre for young audiences. I founded the BYU Young Company (formerly known as the Whittlin’ Whistlin’ Brigade) as a tool to bless lives and train students to work in the area.” Dr. Oaks hopes that the TYA/USA award bearing his name will likewise serve as a clarion call that encourages the teaching of theatre to young, eager audiences. Since its creation in 2013, the Harold Oaks Award has been awarded to Joette Pelster (2013), People’s Light & Theatre Company (2013), Scot Copeland (2014) and Metro Theatre Company (2014). The 2015 award recipients will be announced in May of this year. For more information on Dr. Oaks, click here.

The CFAC Highlights Prophets, Founders, Friends and Alumni as Part of the HFAC 50th Celebration

February 09, 2015 12:00 AM
To commemorate the 50 year history of the HFAC, we have selected a few individuals we consider as prophets, founders, friends and alumni of the arts and communications who have either gone from the HFAC into a global arena or have been impacted by our students and faculty. The fourth floor of the HFAC features posters that include quotes from these individuals. We are putting up one poster a week until the gala celebration. Kevin Cantrell CFAC Alumnus (BFA, 2008) Principal of Kevin Cantrell Design I believe there is a third lens we must all have: the lens of conscience or a belief that transcends and guides our design. At the end of the day, making something beautiful isn’t enough. A designer must be guided by a set of values or principles. If the designer chooses to be guided by this lens, or an inner voice of light and truth, then s/he will discover that the Lord can grant him/ her capacities far beyond their normal abilities. Kevin Cantrell is an award-winning graphic designer, branding expert, and alumnus of the Brigham Young University, specializing in typography. Cantrell worked for BYU Magazine as a writer while studying graphic design in the Department of Visual Arts. When he graduated in April 2008, Cantrell was selected to speak at the department’s convocation. After graduating, Cantrell was hired by Hint Creative as an art director. While there, he won several awards for his print design. In 2012, he branched out on his own to create his own company, Kevin Cantrell Design which he did in addition to his continuing duties at Hint Creative. By the summer of 2014, he took it on full-time. Much of Cantrell’s work is religiously themed. In 2013, he produced a Christmas promotion that depicted the true light of Christmas. The artwork was printed on Gruppo Cordenons Moondream paper, which turns translucent upon hot stamping and reinforces the concept of light when backlit. Since starting Kevin Cantrell design, he has earned several other awards and recognitions. In October 2014, the Art Director’s Club awarded him with the Young Guns award which honors promising artists under 30 years old. Additionally, his startup has won three other recognitions in CommArts 2014 Typography Annual. In 2014, Cantrell worked with fellow alumni (and coworkers at Hint Creative) Gloria Pak, Christian Hansen, and Rory Bruggeman to collaborate with the Museum of Art and Design (MAD) exhibition, The Art of Scent, 1889-2012. It was a unique exhibit that elevated scent to the same level of design. Written by: Derek Gurr

Celebrating the HFAC 50th Anniversary with student creativity and $300 awards

February 06, 2015 12:00 AM
In light of the April Gala Celebration, the CFAC Student Association has teamed up with the Dean's Office to hold a creativity competition, with awards for the most-liked entries on social media. The rules for the competition are as follows: ● Create an entry (can be an art piece, choreography, musical arrangement, etc. etc..) that connects the present of the College of Fine Arts and Communications and its students with their past. It must relate to the theme “From This Place Into All the World.” We want to emphasize that the HFAC has had a big global impact as they have been at BYU as students and left them as professionals. To post their submission, students need to tag their photo on their personal social media accounts (Facebook or Instagram) with the hashtag #icreateHFAC and another hashtag with their department name (ie. #Dance #Music #Comms #TMA #Art #Design). As a committee we will look over the submissions and organize them by department and decide which entries will make the final cut for voting on the college social media sites. Each department will have one winner ($300 for each department and a prize for the best interdisciplinary collaborative project, with at least two different departments involved from the college). They will win based off the number of likes they get on their entry. The final submission date will be March 15 so the CFAC-SA can judge and decide on the winners well before the HFAC 50th Anniversary Gala. For any questions, email Shelbi Anderson at sja1@byu.edu.

Alumni featured in Communication Arts Typography Annual

February 02, 2015 12:00 AM
Graphic Design alumni Kevin Cantrell (BFA '08) and Arlo Vance (BFA '09) were featured in Communication Arts Typography Annual 5 this month for their 7 Days Series. Cantrell's craftsmanlike nature shines through in his meticulous design details. The Terra poster (above) is third in the series. The text quotes the first few verses in Genesis on the creation. The four corners of the work represent the seasons. Cantrell and Vance bring text and image together with the blossoming type face reading, ' let the earth bring forth.' In the corner representing the transition between summer and fall, the typeface begins to wilt. The 7 Days Series if printed in fourteen versions, including a laster etching on cherrywood. To see more of Cantrell's work click here. for Vance's work, click here. Visit Kevin Cantrell's HFAC 50th profile
