This annual showcase of the BYU School of Music’s premier instrumental ensembles features performances by BYU Philharmonic, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band.

The summer of 2014 was incredible for the BYU Department of Dance, in part because of an amazing opportunity provided for dancers in all disciplines.

BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men’s Chorus, and Women’s Chorus present the annual showcase of classical, contemporary, and sacred choral works September 25-26, 7:30 pm at the de Jong Concert Hall. Choirs conducted by Ronald Staheli, Rosalind Hall, and Jean Applonie. From classical to jazz to world beats, the BYU School of Music sponsors a variety of ensembles representing numerous styles and genres on the musical spectrum. Orchestras such as the BYU Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra impress with their richly coordinated sounds. BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men's Chorus, and Women's Chorus showcase the best of choral music at the university. Synthesis takes big-band jazz to a new level with every performance. What could be lovelier on a cool autumn evening than the Bard under the stars? Shakespeare’s witty comedy of love, honor, and deception comes to vibrant life on a bare stage in the courtyard of the Joseph F. Smith Building this Thursday-Friday, Sept. 25-26, 7:00 PM. The full spectrum of dance shines in this annual showcase of the university’s finest movers. Featuring a salute to the international touring successes of Ballroom Dance Company, Contemporary Dance Theatre, International Folk Dance Ensemble, Living Legends, and Theatre Ballet.

Join us for the free screening of Full Circle, a new documentary film that tells the story of how one performance by a BYU dance group 30 years ago would inspire a legacy of future dancers in China. The screening will take place in the Pardoe Theatre this Saturday, September 20 at 9:15 p.m., directly after the performance of eviDANCE at the de Jong Concert Hallin the HFAC.

Royal Gay Nebeker III, an alumnus of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, died September 6 at the age of 69. He was well known throughout the Pacific Northwest for his talents in visual arts, as well as his contributions as an educator.

On Thursday, September 11, the HFAC will host a one-of-a-kind reception of faculty artwork from 5-9pm in the B.F. Larsen Gallery.

Recently hired as the new Head of Education for the Brigham Young University Museum of Art (MOA), BYU alumna Janalee Emmer is excited to share her passion for art with the university and the community. Read more about her story here.

Jeff Martin, Arts Manager of BYU Arts Production, was recently quoted in Inside Arts, a magazine published by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. APAP is the trade organization of presenters in the United States. In the article, Martin talks about how the OFF THE MAP theatre festival came to be.

The Piccolo Artist Competition occurs every other year in Chicago, bringing some of the country’s best piccolo players together to compete. And this month, a BYU graduate took first place. The Piccolo Artist Competition is one of 19 competitions put on by the National Flute Association. Contestants include high school students, college students and professionals. Jennifer Nealon, a 2009 BYU School of Music graduate, took home a first place prize of $1,500 for her piccolo playing, beating out hundreds of other competitors. This is not the first time someone with a BYU affiliation has won a competition hosted by the National Flute Association. Annie Elmer, another 2009 SOM graduate, won first place in the Orchestral Audition Competition in 2010. In 2013, Catherine Winters, an incoming BYU freshman, won first place in the High School Soloist Competition.

From an applicant pool of about 1,000 singers, only 40 were invited to Los Angeles to compete at PlÁ¡cido Domingo’s annual Operalia competition a few days ago. Rachel Willis-SÁ¸rensen, a BYU School of Music graduate, recently took first place. She also received two other recognitions. Read the Los Angeles Times recap of the competition here.
