December 2013 Arts Calendar Tickets are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-2981,byuarts.com/tickets. 3 — BYU’s University Orchestra and University Strings will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. 3 — A String Chamber Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 313 of the University Parkway Center. The center is located at 1650 N. University Ave., Provo. Admission is free. 4 — The BYU Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. 4 — A Flute Chamber Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 313 of the University Parkway Center. There will also be a matinee performance Saturday at 2 p.m. Using a cast of more than 200 talented dancers, singers and musicians in colorful costumes, different cultures unite to give the message of peace on earth and goodwill toward all. There will also be a matinee performance Saturday at 3 p.m. 7 — “Tuba Christmas” will be performed at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. BYU vocalists sweep first round of Metropolitan Opera National Council competition

The Utah District Auditions of the 2013-14 Metropolitan Opera National Council yielded four winners on November 16, all of which were BYU students or BYU alumni. The competition was held on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City and featured 18 singers.

The mission of the Theatre and Media Arts is to promote literacy, creativity, and spirituality by exploring their interrelatedness in the arts of theatre and media, in an effort to illuminate and confirm truth and the infinite potential of the human soul. BYU School of Music faculty piano-cello duo to perform Dec. 10

Cellist Michelle Kesler and pianist Jeffrey Shumway of Brigham Young University’s School of Music faculty will be performing Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free. The duo will play Samuel Barber’s Violoncello Sonata, op. 6, Alfred Schnittke’s Violoncello Sonata, No. 1 and Johannes Brahms’ Violoncello Sonata, No. 2, Op. 102. Kesler is a visiting instructor in string performance. She received her bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of Colorado-Boulder and her master’s and doctorate in music performance from Arizona State University. Shumway has been a professor of keyboard studies at BYU since 1985. He began his studies at BYU and received his bachelor’s degree in 1976. He continued his studies at Juilliard and Indiana University. He is a member of the acclaimed American Piano Quartet and the American Piano Duo and has performed and recorded in the United States, Europe, the Far East and Canada. He is the recipient of the Gina Bachauer Medal of Artistic Distinction and took second place in the 1977 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. Alison Dobbins, Digital Media Artist, Coming to Brigham Young University November 20-22, as a CFAC Visiting Scholar

Film Maker and Projection Designer Alison Dobbins will be visiting Brigham Young University from November 20 to November 22 to present workshops and discussions on the integration of digital media with live performance. This is a great opportunity for new media artists, theatre designers, and live performance directors to hear about the growing field of projection design. The schedule of events available to attend are listed below. Alison is currently the head of Design and Technology and an Assistant Professor of Integrated Media Performance Design at Michigan State University. She received her M.F.A. in Digital Cinema from National University and her A.B. in Mathematics from Oberlin College.
