Awards Season 2023: BYU Students Honored with Prestigious Scholarships, First-Place Finishes

CFAC Students Are Among Those Awarded Top Ratings and First-Place Prizes at National and International Contests

Y News recently rounded up a selection of prestigious awards that BYU students have won in 2023. Many individual students and student groups in the College of Fine Arts and Communications were among those highlighted. These accomplishments represent the dedication and talent of students on campus and reflect the top ranking departments in the College.

The Animation Career Review announced their 9th annual rankings for graphic design with BYU’s Design Department receiving some of the highest rankings out of the 700 schools considered. BYU’s graphic design MFA program was ranked #25 which places them in the top 4%. Their BFA program received an even higher ranking of #19. The animation programs were ranked #11 for the MFA and #10 for the BFA, placing them in the top 6%. BYU illustration was ranked #15 for the MFA and #14 for the BFA, placing them in the top 15% of illustration programs nationwide.

Ashley and her husband, Evan West, won first place for the LG Electronics’ Wonderbox Showcase. Along with a large cash prize, their artwork was displayed on LG’s Times Square billboard in New York City.

Two journalism students won a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media. Abby Gunderson won in the On-Air Talent category and Amy Griffin won in the Hard News Feature category.

Emily Hooke received the grand prize at the New Ideas: A Dialogue Project Competition hosted by Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She presented her ideas of uniting generations through technology with senior business leaders and prominent journalists.

BYU AdLab won multiple international awards including the Student Emmy award for best commercial (for the fourth time in a row), eleven Clio Awards, 4 D&AD awards, 3 International ANDYs, the Communication Arts Advertising Award of Excellence, and the National Best of Show for AAF ADDYs (fifth time in last six years). They also received the most shortlisted entries of any other program worldwide in the One Show, ADC, and Young Ones Portfolio Awards. They are now ranked the #1 Creative Advertising Program by the One Club for Creativity student Young Ones competitions.

The BYU Singers choral were one of eleven chamber choirs in the world invited to perform at the International Choral Contest of Tolosa, Spain. They won multiple awards for their performances at the contest.

Five illustration students, Audrey Day, Jaymie Johnson, Simona Love, Audrey Morgan and Samantha Windley, were accepted into the Society of Illustrators’ 2022 Student Scholarship Competition. Approximately 8,700 people entered the competition and 300 were accepted.
