“First Look” Film Festival Premieres on BYU’s West Campus
Those who have been following BYU’s “Final Cut” screenings for the past 21 years may be surprised to see BYU’s Theatre and Media Arts Department advertising “First Look” in its place this spring. According to the Student Film Association (SFA) President Mira Plummer, the content and context have changed enough to warrant a new name. The festival will have two program showings on April 4 in room 1040 of the West Campus Central Building (WCCB) with an Award Show on April 5 where the winning films will be screened and celebrated with a variety of distinctions given by a jury of Media Arts alumni.
Plummer said, “Anyone in the program is allowed to submit their work to be screened in “First Look,” even if it is only their first semester in the program.”
The films still have to survive the “cut” of curation. Members of SFA determine what films will be part of the festival and which will be in each night’s screenings. The end result is “a wide range of short works from media arts students: documentaries, avant-garde explorations, commercials, animation and more,” said SFA Faculty Advisor Brad Barber.
“As a film student, the opportunity to have your work screened early on is really valuable,” Plummer said. “It allows us to see how audiences react to our work and learn from those reactions. It is also just fun to see something you made on the big screen!”
