As the winter semester comes to a close, ensemble and music groups in the School of Music present their final concerts of the semester. This April, enjoy chorale, band and orchestra concerts from some of BYU’s auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles.

University Chorale
Date & Time: April 2 | 7:30 p.m.

Join BYU’s two non-auditioned choirs for their exciting winter semester concert and experience their voices in the acoustics of the new Music Building Concert Hall.

Jazz Ensemble: Jazz Is Everywhere!

Join the Jazz Ensemble for a whirlwind tour of popular media where we find jazz—from movies, TV shows, musicals and more. The concert will feature guest soloists Ben Nichols on tenor saxophone, Kristen Bromley on guitar and Shea Owens with vocals.

“I’m thrilled to direct the BYU Jazz Ensemble and to have such esteemed musicians, colleagues and friends join us as soloists for our season finale,” said Jazz Ensemble director Mark Ammons. “The program is quite varied and will showcase all members and sections of the band. This concert is going to be a fun one from start to finish.”

Women’s Chorus

The Women's Chorus presents a concert that will lift, empower and nourish the soul through secular and spiritual music. The concert will feature music by a variety of composers from the past and present.

University Orchestra + University Strings

Enjoy an evening of orchestral music from across the ages with the combined sounds of University Orchestra and University Strings. These non-auditioned orchestras are open to all students across campus and are directed by students from the BYU master’s program in conducting.

BYU Symphonic Band: “The Tragic”
Date & Time: April 10 | 7:30 p.m.

For their final concert of the year, the Symphonic Band performs American composer James Barnes’s “Symphony No. 3.” The symphony has retained the nickname “The Tragic” because Barnes wrote it shortly after the death of his daughter.

Symphonic Band director Nate Seamons said, “The BYU Symphonic Band will take you on a journey through trials, despair and bitterness, and lead the listener to new hope, new life and a spirit of rebirth. In my estimation, this symphony is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written for the wind band. Come hear it live. You will not regret it.”

BYU Wind Symphony: WASBE Preview Concert Featuring Pianist Jihea Hong-Park

The BYU Wind Symphony performs a preview of their upcoming concert at the International Conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles to be held in South Korea in July 2024. The Wind Symphony was selected through a competitive process with bands from around the world and was invited to present a featured concert for the conference. The concert features pianist Jihea Hong-Park in a performance of George Gershwin’s marvelous “Rhapsody in Blue” in celebration of the 100th anniversary of its 1924 premiere.

Jazz Voices: Swing into Spring

Celebrate the joys of spring through the music of BYU’s vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz Voices. Jazz Voices, formally known as Syncopation, is not only good at blending and performing as a group; it is made up of incredible soloists. Join us for an evening of jazz standards and classic tunes with a mixture of ensemble and solo pieces.

Director Hayley Kirkland said, “Join Jazz Voices as we celebrate spring with tight harmonies and driving rhythms that will make you want to get up and dance.”

BYU Philharmonic: Pictures at an Exhibition

BYU Philharmonic’s final concert of the semester will feature “Transcend” by Chinese American composer Zhou Tian and “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky. The concert will be a celebration of the orchestra’s first full year in the new Concert Hall.

University Bands
Date & Time: April 16 | 7:30 p.m.

During winter semester, the two University Bands offer an opportunity for non-music majors, marching band members and interested students to perform in the Music Building. This concert will be a culmination of their hard work throughout the semester and will feature band classics as well as new favorites.
