The Instrumental Showcase Will Highlight the Talents of BYU’s Top Bands and Orchestras
The Instrumental Showcase on September 22 will feature BYU’s two top bands and two top orchestras, highlighting the BYU Symphonic Band, BYU Symphony Orchestra, BYU Wind Symphony and BYU Philharmonic.
BYU Symphonic Band, directed by Nate Seamons, will perform pieces including Steven Bryant’s “Ecstatic Fanfare” and Katahj Copley’s “In Living Color.”
Directed by Christian Smith, the BYU Symphony Orchestra will be performing "The Comedians, op. 26” by Dmitry Kabalevsky, a piece consisting of 10 movements.
Under the direction of Shawn Smith, BYU’s Wind Symphony will perform "Cakewalk,” “Schottische” and “Rag” from Robert Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances.” They will also perform “Wedding Dance” from the symphonic suite “Hasseneh” by Jacques Press.
BYU Philharmonic, with conductor Kory Katseanes, will be performing several well-known overtures including Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide” and Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Overture to Die Fledermaus.” Alexander Bennett and Andre Gaspar, two master’s students in orchestral conducting, will conduct two of the three overtures performed by the group.
Katseanes called the showcase a brief introduction to the rest of the season, saying it is “a fun, flashy start to the concert season, with spectacular works for band and orchestra.”
