The BYU Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus Will Take to the de Jong Concert Hall on November 4 to Present a Playful Yet Profound Program
From classical hymns to contemporary works, the Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus promise to offer audiences a wide array of music that they’ll enjoy. This tradition will continue in the groups’ combined concerts on November 4.
“The Women’s and Men’s Chorus always try to do a mix of hymns, classical repertoire, new works and always something fun and accessible,” Men’s Chorus director Brent Wells said. “You’re going to get everything in this concert.”
Both groups are set to premiere new music videos at the concert and showcase a wide variety of the styles and sounds of the groups.
The Men’s Chorus program includes the hymns “The Lord is my Shepherd,” “Redeemer of Israel” and a new rendition of “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief.” They will also perform two African American spiritual pieces.
The Men’s Chorus will finish with their final set, “I’ve Got a Dream,” which features three popular songs about dreams including “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha,” “A Million Dreams” from “The Greatest Showman” and “I’ve Got a Dream” from “Tangled.”
“The Men’s Chorus will engage their inner child and perform a whimsical repertoire,” Wells said of the final set.
The Women’s Chorus will present mostly sacred music in addition to some pieces that are “off the beaten path” according to Wells. One of their songs, “The Marketplace” composed by Wells, details the hardships experienced by Korean women under Imperialist Japanese rule in the early 1900s.
Some of the hymns that the Women’s Chorus will present include “Behold the Wounds in Jesus’ Hands” and “Come Let Us Anew.”
Women’s Chorus director Sonja Poulter said she is looking forward to the premieres of the music videos. Poulter said she is “most excited for the audience to hear a brand-new arrangement of the hymn ‘Beautiful Savior.’”
The closing song performed by the Women’s Chorus is called “I’ll Never Study,” which is a more comical and upbeat piece that was composed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment.
Wells said, “We’ve tried to construct an accessible program that everyone will enjoy.”
