Upcoming School of Music Concerts This October Feature Showcases, Honor Veterans, and Pull Out All the Stops with a New Organ
BYU School of Music stages are lighting up this fall as students, faculty and guest artists present a wide variety of concerts. This October, enjoy solo, choral, band and orchestra concerts from acclaimed guest artists and BYU’s ensembles.
Choir Showcase

Experience the versatility of BYU’s four auditioned choirs — Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Concert Choir and BYU Singers — in this joint concert that features classical and modern works.
“This concert is special because it is the very first performance of the year for all of the choirs. New choir members, new sounds, new repertoire!,” says Andrew Crane, director of University Singers and professor of choral conducting and ensembles. He said that each of the four choirs will sing some pieces, and then all 500+ singers will perform a combined number at the end.
Jazz Showcase: All That Jazz!

Everything jazz — combos to vocal jazz to big bands — is onstage and bringing the heat during “All That Jazz!” There will be jazz favorites, but “due to the improvisational nature of Jazz, every performance is unique,’ says Brian Woodbury, BYU’s new director of Jazz Studies. “Each jazz showcase is new and exciting.”
BYU Symphonic Band Echoes of Today: Contemporary Symphonic Band Reflections

Join the BYU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Nate Seamons, as they explore music written since 2000. “This concert is a celebration of music that has been realized, composed, performed and put into the standard repertoire in just the last 25 years,” says Seamons. “All of the composers that are featured in this concert are alive today and are thrilling examples of the creativity, musicianship, and vitality of the wind band medium.” There will be original music from composers such as Frank Ticheli, Julie Giroux, John Mackey and Nate Kimball.
BRAVO! Dominik Wagner & the BYU Philharmonic

At just 27, virtuoso double bassist Dominik Wagner is in high demand as a soloist and orchestral player around the world.
“Wagner has won multiple international competitions and is a huge name in the double bass world,” says Lyndsay Keith, BRAVO! Producer/Presenter. “We are so lucky to have him here to perform with our students, and it’s so exciting to be part of Homecoming Week!”
Wagner will perform Serge Koussevitzky’s Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra with the BYU Philharmonic as part of a weeklong celebration of the composer’s 150th birthday.

You could call them soundtracks but they are what you have been listening to for years. BYU Symphony Orchestra performs orchestra standards and new favorites under the direction of Christian Smith. Professor Smith said the orchestra will perform pieces originally for stage. The “musical centerpiece” is Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 and 2,” which was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play. Gioachino Rossini’s opera overture to “The Barber of Seville” and Reinhold Gliere’s “Russian Sailor’s Dance” for ballet will round out the evening.
BYU Wind Symphony Myths and Legends: The Lord of the Rings

The BYU Wind Symphony presents music inspired by myths, legends and stories. The concert will feature BYU flute professor Christina Castellanos in a solo inspired by the Greek muse of music and flute, Euterpe and will conclude with Johan de Meij’s seminal Symphony No. 1, “The Lord of the Rings.” Join us on this exciting adventure through Middle-earth!
“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band

Tickets: Standby Only. While all tickets have been distributed, unused tickets will expire at 7:15pm and patrons in the standby line will be allowed to enter the concert hall to claim unfilled seats. Overflow rooms will also allow patrons to watch a live stream in the event that all seats in the Concert Hall are filled.
“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band is the official musical ensemble for the President of the United States and the White House. “The ensemble is widely regarded as one of the best concert bands in the world,” says Shawn Smith, professor of instrumental conducting and director of bands. They perform the official music for presidential inauguration ceremonies, visits of Heads of State to the White House and other special presidential events.
BRAVO! Daniel Cook Organ Dedicatory Recital

Durham Cathedral organist Daniel Cook debuts the Concert Hall’s brand-new organ in the Dedicatory Recital of the Concert Hall Organ Inaugural Series. Cook’s “peerless” musicianship (as described in Gramophone: The World’s Best Classical Music Reviews) and artfully selected repertoire will highlight the unique features and colors of BYU’s new 4-manual, 81-rank Létourneau organ.
“This will be a very special event,” says Lyndsay Keith, BRAVO! Producer/Presenter. “We’ve been waiting with great anticipation for the new Létourneau concert organ to be installed in the Concert Hall. Daniel Cook is the perfect person to help us with this ribbon cutting ceremony.”
