Experiential Learning with ‘States of America’ Project | Arts & Comms: Behind the Stories

Professor Brad Barber gives students opportunities to develop their skills by assisting with his “States of America” video project that highlights our country’s cultural and physical diversity. The project was started in 2009 and originally self-released, but was later picked up by PBS.

Brandon Carraway

Brandon Carraway is a media arts student. He appreciates the one-on-one mentorship opportunities the program provides. The media arts program has encouraged Carraway to continue to make “beautiful, meaningful and spiritual” projects.

Emma Volz

Emma Volz is a media arts student. She was an editor for the South Dakota episode of professor Brad Barber’s “States of America” project, which she feels helped improve her technical skills. Her work on this project will be able to be viewed nationwide.

Brad Barber

Brad Barber is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker. He has been teaching documentary production in BYU’s Theatre & Media Arts Department since 2007. Most recently, he is working on his “States of America” project with TMA students.
