CFAC Students To Have Art Featured In Spectrum 21

Graduates Rebecca Sorge and Miranda Meeks, and former BYU student Kari Christensen had fantasy work accepted into the Spectrum 21 Annual Juried Fantasy Art Competition.

Spectrum was established in 1993 with the intent of providing artists with a regular showcase for the best science fiction, fantasy, religious and other artwork.

Sorge graduated from the College of Fine Arts and Communications in December 2013 with a BFA in Illustration. Sorge’s piece, “Against These Things,” depicts a young woman inside a vessel, surrounded by waters and fish of the sea.

“You get to tell a story. That’s something you get to do in an illustration,” she noted.

The piece was inspired by a story in The Book of Mormon, where the brother of Jared is constructing barges to cross the ocean. In Ether 2:25 the Lord tells him, “And behold, I prepare you against these things; for ye cannot cross this great deep save I prepare you against the waves of the sea...”

While Sorge loves all art, she has an affinity for pieces with religious meaning.

“I’ve always loved the fantastic and whimsical things,” Sorge said. “As a kid I loved reading stories about fairy tales or far away places, and that’s very much stayed with me through the years.”

Sorge expressed her gratitude to the CFAC faculty who, over the years, provided her with inspiration and guidance.

“The whole illustration faculty is incredible,” Sorge said. “Justin Kunz was extremely helpful in encouraging students to get their work out there.”

Sorge will continue to create art and showcase it wherever she can.

“I’m so happy that I’ve had the chance to share my art with people” Sorge said.
