160 Students Showcase Their Hard Work on Technique and Performance in a Culminating Experience
There is nothing like seeing BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company in action. They have been heralded by the National Dance Council of America (NCDA) as “one of the Ballroom world’s greatest treasures.”
The program itself boasts thousands of annual enrollments from majors and non-majors across the university and is the largest program of its kind in the world. The five teams that will perform in the Marriott Center this April are chosen through rigorous auditions.
Their record speaks for itself. The company has won numerous awards and competitions since its start in 1970, setting standards of excellence for many years. The BYU Ballroom company is the undefeated U.S. Formation Champion and was the first American team to win the prestigious British Formation Championship. They have since repeated that win numerous times.
The company frequently tours nationally and internationally. Their vast repertoire includes “traditional waltzes to rhythmic Latin dances.” There’s something for everyone at their performances.
Curt Holman, artistic director of BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company, is particularly excited for audiences to see “the final showings of their competitive ballroom medley, ‘The Sound of Music,’ Latin medley ‘Carmen’ and an award-winning cabaret of ‘She Used To Be Mine’ presented by student U.S. Cabaret Champions, Logan Barnes and Katie Stolle.” The performances will also feature “new choreography from ballroom dance faculty members and World Latin dance experts, Alexander Chernositov and Arina Grishanina.”
Holman said, “The BYU Ballroom Dance Company [is] a unique entity equipped to present highly technical material in an artistic and theatrical setting here at Brigham Young University.” This one-of-a-kind production will showcase the dancers' “artistic excellence and sophisticated artistry.”
