Bio
Dr. Claudine Bigelow is a member of the Deseret string Quartet and Professor of Viola at the Brigham Young University School of Music. Solo recital and string quartet appearances have taken her around the United States, Europe, and New Zealand. Claudine has played with the viola sections of the National and Utah Symphonies, Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, and the National Chamber Orchestra. Every summer she performs with the Grand Teton Music Festival.
In 2012, Bigelow was invited to be a Fulbright Senior Scholar, where she served as artist-in-residence at the Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music in Wellington. While there she gave many concerts, taught and recorded the 44 Duos of Béla Bartók with the New Zealand violist, Donald Maurice, called Voices from the Past. Critics have said the following:

In 2016, Maurice and Bigelow published a critical edition of Bartók’s 44 Duos with Editio Musica Budapest.
Claudine is a strong contributor to the viola community. She is in demand as an artist-teacher, with students finding success as orchestral musicians, professors, chamber music artists and music educators. She has been invited to give master classes internationally, from Iceland to New Zealand. Her articles have appeared in The Strad, Journal of the American Viola Society, American String Teacher and Strings. Claudine gave many years of service to the executive board of the American Viola Society. In 2005 she hosted the Primrose International Viola Competition and has since served as jury chair, adjudicator and on the advisory board. The AVS honored her with the Maurice Riley Award for distinguished contributions to the viola.

March Faith and Works: Creating Art Expands Music and Virtuosity
When musicians discuss collaboration, they often refer to performing with fellow instrumentalists. While working with other musicians is important for School of Music Professor Claudine Bigelow, she has taken her music to a new level through her interdisciplinary endeavors with different BYU departments.
In her March 1 Faith and Works lecture, Bigelow shared experiences that have influenced her life as a musician and as an artist. She explained that her opportunities illustrate how students can think about what experiences they could seek to better themselves.
“All of us are involved in disciplines across our college that require us to put ourselves on the line and to really speak from the center of ourselves,” Bigelow said. She began by sharing experiences that have changed her life. Read Full Story
