Brigham Young University’s Living Legends will portray the changing seasons experienced by ancient cultures through songs and dances from Latin America, Polynesia and Native America Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.
Tickets are $10 or $8 with BYU or student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.
From the graceful Hawaiian hula to Mexican Fiesta dances of celebration to the excitement and beauty of a Native American Pow Wow, “Seasons” will depict themes that relate to all civilizations and cultures.
“The highlight of the performance is the students as they represent the beauty and the joy of their cultures in a magnificent way,” said director Janielle Christensen. “The costumes, lighting and sound enhance the students’ expressions.”
The Living Legends program will open with a Native American piece portraying the sacredness of the eagle and the Yakima swan. The program will then give the audience a glimpse into the cultures of Ecuador, Hawaii, Samoa, Guatemala, Paraguay, Tahiti, Colombia, Tonga and New Zealand.
Living Legends director Christensen works with 36 performers of Latin American, Native American or Polynesian heritage, along with an eight-member technical crew working with lighting, props and sound.
Living Legends captures the essence of ancient and modern cultures with authentic choreography, intricate costumes and ethnic music that bring to life the beauty of traditional cultures often forgotten in today's modern world.
