Vocal Point-Vocal Point Showcases Their Entertaining Style to the World on NBC’s The Sing-Off

This fall Vocal Point is sharing their passion for maximum a cappella with millions of viewers through participation in NBC’s The Sing-Off. BYU’s all-male a cappella sensation is one of 16 groups featured on the third season of the hit TV show hosted by Nick Lachey with judges Ben Folds, Sara Bareilles, and Shawn Stockman.

“If you are already a Vocal Point fan, get ready to see Vocal Point take on some music and styles that you have never heard them do before!” says Tanner Nilsson, percussionist for the group. “You can also expect tight harmonies, stellar lead vocals, a grooving rhythm section, and entertaining choreography.”

The group had to juggle classes, work, internships, and even weddings while taping the show, but all agree the experience was unforgettable. “We got to see the ins and outs of show biz and also got to see just what Vocal Point is capable of,” said Vocal Point member Ben Murphy. “We worked so hard and accomplished so much. I think it has been revealing to all of us just what we can achieve and the potential influence we have on others.”

Nilsson said training for the competition began long before the show started taping. Nilsson credits competing in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA)–where Vocal Point placed second–as a main source of preparation. “We learned the process of arranging, learning, practicing, cleaning, and polishing a number to be its very best as we competed in the rounds of ICCA,” Nilsson said. “That prepared us well for the fast-paced and tight competition that is The Sing-Off.”

For group member Tyler Sterling, meeting other talented competitors was the highlight of the experience and altogether inspiring. “I think the exposure from The Sing-Off will only take Vocal Point to new heights,” Sterling said. “The members of the group continually get better and better, and I’m excited to see what kind of talent we will have audition this year!”
