I'm Here
By Edgar Flores
Over the summer, I had the opportunity to work directing a short documentary with a small crew of talented students from my production class. The idea was simple: interview people who moved to Utah and ask them about their lives, their dreams and passions, but especially what they do to find belonging.
This experience made me understand the value of recognizing everyone's effort. By doing so we contribute to creating a healthy work environment where everyone can feel their ideas and creativity are respected and valued. Additionally, this experience transformed me by inspiring me to look around and pay attention to the small details in my surroundings, which as filmmakers is essential we can do. There is beauty everywhere, we just have to look. Now, when I'm walking or riding the bus I pay attention and try to find what's inspiring and beautiful. It feels good and helps me feel grateful for being here.
In the process of making this short film, my perspective on the power of filmmaking to bring people together was expanded. I was now able to see the real impact art has in transforming people’s lives and creating community. I believe this is an experience I couldn't have had in any place other than BYU. The people I’ve met here and the values we strive to portray in the media we create helped transform this project into an inspiring learning opportunity where we all could learn from each other and practice christ-like attributes and leadership skills.
I know there is a god, and he has created this world for us to find joy in it. There is beauty everywhere, we just need to pay close attention. Through this experience I learned beauty is not only found in the marvelous natural creations, but also in connecting with people. I know our Heavenly Father has blessed each one of us with unique talents, for some its art for others might be sports, no matter what your talent is, I have a testimony that when you strive to use your talents to find beauty in everyday life and to help other people you can feel God’s love for you.
