“My time at BYU has made me fall in love with music over and over again, more than I ever could have imagined," said music education grad Samantha Gordon. Gordon graduated in December 2021 and walked this April at convocation. "I've been able to experience the most beautiful, high-level musicmaking (both as a singer and as an audience member) all over the world: from St. George, Santa Fe, and Aspen all the way to London, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest.
"Surprisingly enough, though, I flourished most at BYU during the pandemic, when travel and live concerts weren't a possibility. Being a member of BYU Singers, even with the masks and air purifiers and Zoom rehearsals, taught me just how much the world depends on art in times of turmoil. I've never felt that I've made as much of a difference as a singer than during those performances we gave to completely empty concert halls.
"Now, I view my relationship with music in a renewed way: I never take for granted the power that comes from connecting to the world through song, and every chance I have to share my talents with others is a gift. That's something I'll take with me for the rest of my life."
