BYU Design professor Doug Thomas featured in BYU Magazine’s “A Thing of Beauty” Series

Thomas discusses how typefaces are beautiful storytellers

To many, Futura is just another typeface that appears across different mediums of art. But to BYU Department of Design professor Doug Thomas, Futura is a storyteller in its own right. “For me, Futura is beautiful because it’s an echo of the ethos of its day,” Thomas says in a video for the BYU Magazine video series, “A Thing of Beauty.” Thomas explains that once a typeface enters the pool of society, it becomes a visual language, complete with unique vocabulary, syntax and grammar. “Typefaces are works of art. Every single letter has been carefully crafted to both legibility and to delight the eye,” Thomas says. Learn more about Thomas’s take in the video below.
