FRUIT SALAD | GRACE WHITE & CAROLYN KOO

“FRUIT SALAD” is the latest gallery in the Gallery 303 Foyer. It’s a syrupy and colorful assortment of the familiar with undertones of unfamiliarity.

“The name for the show came from one of my paintings that depict fruit taking on unnatural shapes to form a bigger image. This changes the piece from simply being a painting of fruit to something different and provoking,” said creator Carolyn Koo.

The “FRUIT SALAD” work exists in an in-between, and meaning is found in the subconscious. Both creators find it fascinating how people’s subconscious minds see more than what their eyes see and can pick up things they don’t notice. “It is not the directly absurd things we see that makes us stop and further look into a piece, but rather what our subconscious mind perceives and attempts to understand,” said co-creator Grace White.

They thought the name “FRUIT SALAD” seemed fitting because fruit salad consists of fruit that has been made into something different. The exhibit includes basic items like fruit, clouds, and everyday objects that juxtapose a lightness with deeper meanings that can be found within the manipulation of these objects.
