What better way to end the summer than with new exhibitions opening in the BYU Design Department’s 1313 gallery and the BYU Museum of Art (MOA)? As we near the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year, come support art and design faculty as they display their work in the annual Faculty Show exhibition. Be sure to check out new pieces at the Museum of Art, with a new exhibition featuring the artwork of BYU art alum Brian Kershisnik (’88).

Department of Design: 1313 Gallery

Design Department Faculty Show | Open from August 19–September 11, 2024
All year, faculty from the Department of Design create award-winning work at the highest levels of the industry. This August, the 1313 gallery is showcasing fresh projects made by BYU’s design professors. The exhibition will highlight a wide range of media, including photography, illustration, graphic design, animation, motion design, industrial, interactive design and more. The show will run from August 19 through September 11, located at design gallery 1313, in the WCCB.

Museum of Art Galleries

From the Vault: American Highlights and Recent Acquisitions | Open through September 7, 2024
This exhibition houses 18 audience favorites from the museum’s American collection, including works by Minerva Teichert, Norman Rockwell, John Singer Sargent, Dorothy Weir Young, Mahonri Young and Daniel Ridgeway Knight.

Reconciliation: Biblical Imagination in German Expressionist Prints | Open through October 19, 2024
Explore a period of religious, philosophical and artistic transition through the expressionist artwork of 20th-century German artists. “Reconciled: Biblical Imagination in German Expressionist Prints” brings viewers art by renowned artists Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Kathë Kollwitz, Otto Dix, Christian Rohlfs, Karl Schmidt-Rottloff, Vassily Kandinsky and Edvard Munch. Each of these artists found meaning in and bared their souls through biblical themes and narratives as they endured the conflict of early 20th-century Germany.

Counterpoint | Open through December 7, 2024
Step back in time to explore pop art and beyond through this explosion of art and culture from the 1960s to 1980s. “Counterpoint” features prints, sculpture, comics, photography, rugs and paintings from the MOA collection by over twenty artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Edna Andrade, Benny Andrews, Helen Gerardia, Dorothy Grebenak, Jann Haworth, Robert Indiana, Reinhard Kraft and Ed Ruscha.

Off Kilter, On Point | Open through December 7, 2024
Dive into the tumultuous 1960s with artwork that embraced and challenged the ever-changing ideals of the era. This traveling exhibition from Colorado State University’s Gregory Allicar Museum of Art presents a variety of pieces ranging from abstract to pop art by artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana and Helen Gerardia.

The Difficult Part: Brian Kershisnik | Opens August 16, 2024
Latter-day Saint artist and BYU art alum, Brian Kershisnik, is known for his skill in combining the holy with the whimsical and the familiar with the transcendent. In this exhibition, a mid-career retrospective, over 100 of his pieces will be displayed highlighting Kershisnik’s exploration of love, grief, service, loss, inspiration, contemplation and eternity.
