Join Gibney Company in the RB Theatre on Feb. 3 and 4 as its members perform meaningful dances by rising choreographers. Its contemporary performances are part of the 2022-23 BRAVO! Performing Arts Series, as well as the company’s national nine-city tour.

Once a dance company with only one studio, Gibney has evolved since its founding in 1991 to encompass 23 studios and thousands of artists. The company is also largely dedicated to community work and uses its platform and artistic gifts to reach marginalized groups and others in need.

Gibney Company will spend three days before its performances working with BYU students in dance and performing majors and civic engagement minors. The group will cover topics ranging from contemporary technique to activism through artistry to creative storytelling.

In concert, Gibney Company’s Artistic Associates will perform five pieces from choreographers around the world. In one of these pieces, titled “A Measurable Existence,” choreographer Yue Yin uses dance to show how self discovery is fueled by human connection.

Nathan Balser, the Contemporary Area Coordinator for the Department of Dance, expressed his excitement for the upcoming performances and the uniqueness of Gibney Company.

“A major draw of this group is that they are not only some of the best contemporary dancers in the world, but they also incorporate social justice into their work as dancers,” Balser said. “As a group, they work with minority populations, such as domestic abuse victims, to help them learn and cope with life's circumstances via dance.”

For anyone interested in how dancers can be advocates for social change, don’t miss Gibney Company’s inspiring, soulful performances.
