Why do you create/participate in music?

My initial motivations for pursuing music came from the influence of my family. Although I don't come from a history of serious, professional performers, I attended my siblings’ music lessons and performances.

What inspires you?

When I find a great piece that has never been recorded before or perhaps never played, I want to dive in and push the repertoire frontier back. This is why I spent so much time in the Primrose International Viola Archive on campus.

How have you found belonging during your time at BYU?

I have found belonging and meaning in the College of Fine Arts and Communications despite aspects of my life that aren't universally welcomed at BYU. By bonding with my peers and striving for a better experience together, I have felt like a valued member of the music community on campus.

What’s your go-to study snack?

I love sitting down with a large (and unhealthy) cup of Goldfish. You could say it's my preferred drink.

What was your favorite project you worked on as a student?

As a research assistant and music transcriptionist at the Harold B. Lee Library, I helped to reproduce the lost film scores of composer Max Steiner's early work. I listened to early sound films from the early 1930s and wrote down what I heard. I did this with over three dozen films over a year and a half. My work is now available in an online database for music professionals to use in their research.

Who is your favorite artist and why?

I'm currently fascinated by the artistry of violist Timothy Ridout. He tours with orchestras and releases albums, which is rare for a violist (especially for how young he is). I encountered him when he and I were playing the same underappreciated works at the same time. He embodies the power and clarity that I strive for in my own performance.

What are your aspirations/goals for the future?

I have been offered acceptance to Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, and I plan on pursuing a masters degree in performance there. I want to leave many potential options for my musical career open, but my ultimate goal would be to teach full-time at a university. I aspire to continue researching, performing, and recording unknown and neglected music.
