I WILL SPEAK AS IF YOU CAN HEAR ME | NICOLE NAVARRO

“I will speak as if you can hear me” is an awkward attempt at connection. Utilizing photographs and video performance, Nicole Navarro explores mental health, nature, and spirituality through snapshots of a growing relationship between a girl and a tree. Her experiences with OCD and fear of trees falling on her have informed much of her art in the past; however, this body of work is not rooted in fear or apprehension, but rather in hope, healing, and a desire to understand. These works, ritualistic, melancholy, and deeply psychological, ask what it means to talk to something that cannot speak back, and what it means to believe that something can hear you, even if you receive no indication that it is listening.

“I hope that people who see my show feel the sincerity in my attempt to answer deep, difficult questions. I hope that people who have seen my work before feel the hope and healing that is absent in my other work. I hope that people who are not familiar with my work take the time to ask questions about why I am doing these strange actions and ponder how it could be meaningful to them,” Navarro said.
