INNER WORKINGS | GRETCHEN BUTLER

“Why does it make us uncomfortable to consider the things inside our bodies?” asks exhibit creator Gretchen Butler. “Blood, bones, organs—even just the thought leaves some people queasy. Why are we repulsed by the very things that keep us alive? Despite our perceived familiarity with our own bodies, the forms within become strange, abstract and uncomfortable when closely considered,” she said.

Butler said this exhibition is a celebration of and reflection on those strange, unseen things inside of us. “By portraying body features in new contexts, some of which can be unsettling, I hope to inspire viewers to become aware of the beauty of their own inner workings.”

“I would like others to take away an awareness of the things within their bodies and an appreciation for their body’s aesthetic forms. I want them to have this sense that they house something mysterious and beautiful and terrifying and that this is a natural part of them,” Butler said.
