Design Major from August 2024

Everything I am today is directly tied to my decision as an 18-year-old to go to BYU. The moment I stepped foot in Helaman Halls it was like my soul was on fire–I was home.

Every class I have taken, every little piece of feedback on an essay, every lecture, every study abroad, every late-night library study session has impacted me so much. I think the best part about being a design major is that I have come to know God as a creator, as my creator. I have crafted and loved each of my designs. I like to think that God has designed, crafted and loved each of us in the same way. Creating with my hands has made me closer to God and Jesus.

BYU has brought me a lot of things, incredible professors, peers, and friendships that I hope I hold onto forever. But more importantly, it has taught me that I am a Child of God, who is the greatest artist, designer and creator. He created me from the same stardust I learned about in my freshman year astronomy class, with hands that remind me of late nights in the letterpress lab working in a labor of love. BYU has my whole heart. I am forever thankful that little 18-year-old me took the leap of faith and came to this campus that I now love. –Jane Coates, Design BA
