As construction on campus continues, more of the new Arts Building’s features are beginning to take shape, giving a better perspective on what the building will offer students: a state-of-the-art facility aimed at fostering creativity and collaboration across multiple artistic disciplines. Travis Dance, an architect with BYU Physical Facilities, shared details about the unique design elements and the exciting construction progress.

One of the distinct features of the new building is its unique layout. “The north and south main entrances are positioned to create a diagonal corridor through the building,” said Dance. This design connects the plaza south of the Museum of Art (MOA) to Brigham Square outside of the Wilkinson Student Center, encouraging students to pass through the building rather than walk around it.

Several features have taken shape as construction progresses, including galleries for the Departments of Art and Design, a costume shop, photo studio, AV editing suite and props room. “A few of the more notable features are the two balcony levels and catwalk structure of the Main Stage Theatre,” said Dance.

Many other parts of the building are still in development. Dance said some features currently being worked on are the Studio Theatre, which will house one balcony level, and the tallest part of the building, a fly loft above the Main Stage Theatre. Other significant features currently being installed include grand staircases in the lobby spaces and the roofing on the west side.

For students, the new Arts Building promises to enhance their educational and creative experience. “There is an outdoor space on the north side of the fourth floor, and we’ve designed the art spaces to feature lots of natural light,” Dance said, emphasizing the building’s focus on fostering an inspiring environment for students.

Dance assured that construction is moving steadily forward. Expressing his optimism for the future of the building, he said, "Progress is being made each day."

With these innovative features, the new Arts Building is set to become a cornerstone of BYU's creative community, offering students a dynamic space for artistic expression and growth.
