Spectacular to Celebrate a Century of Music

As part of BYU’s 2012 centennial celebration of the Karl G. Maeser building, the university will honor the venerable structure during Homecoming 2012 and Homecoming Spectacular, scheduled Oct. 11 and 12 in the Marriott Center, will build its show around the Maeser Building in a lively Homecoming Spectacular concert that features six of BYU’s premiere performing groups.

The Ballroom Dance Company, Cougarettes, Contemporary Dance Theatre, Synthesis, Vocal Point and Young Ambassadors will converge to perform music and dance that represents 100 years of entertainment. The first segment will highlight the roots of upper campus from 1912 through the late ‘20s. Also planned are salutes to years of hardship, the university’s expansion, the era when BYU began taking its performers throughout the world, and a finale called “A New Century.”

Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets will be available at BYUtickets.com Sept. 10.

“With great sacrifice, the Maeser Building was built on what was then called Temple Hill, and we are celebrating its heritage along with the visions and dreams that have been fulfilled since the building was dedicated in 1911,” says Janielle Christensen, Spectacular artistic director.

The Homecoming theme, “Of Pillars and Cornerstones,” is a direct reflection of the Maeser Building.

Producer Michael Handley explains, “The Maeser Building, supported by pillars is the cornerstone of campus. We are planning the show with the building serving as a silent sentinel that witnessed BYU’s growth from a humble beginning to a worldwide institution.”

“I guess you could say this building is a symbol for everything we are,” adds Christensen.
