Symphonic Band Infuses Good Luck Into Music With ‘Old, New, Borrowed, Blue’ Concert

Join the BYU Symphonic Band for an evening of well wishes and good luck

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence in your shoe.” This simple rhyme is a familiar tradition for brides-to-be—a saying for good luck as they hope for a long and happy marriage. On March 31, the BYU Symphonic Band explores this good luck charm in its concert “Old, New, Borrowed, Blue.”

“For our concert,” said director Nate Seamons, “the Symphonic Band brings to the audience a variety of musical expressions associated with these good luck charms.” The band will use the saying to unite the concert’s themes of classical, new and blues music.

As part of the “new” portion of the concert, the band will perform local composer Marden Pond’s newly written piece “Granite,” and for the “blue” part of the evening, the band will conclude with George Gershwin’s classic piece “Rhapsody in Blue.” This final piece will feature the skills of BYU piano faculty member Jared Pierce.

For an evening of good luck and well wishes, don’t miss out on the Symphonic Band’s concert “Old, New, Borrowed, Blue”!
