Why do you create/participate in art?

I create art because it's the coolest thing ever! I love to take artistic ideas that are in my head and make them reality. It feels so cool to make something that feels authentic to myself and my interests and have others relate to it as well. I feel like making art and learning about art is the best way to get to know yourself and others.

What inspires you?

I am artistically inspired every day. I have a list on my phone titled "random art ideas" and I am always adding to it. Things that inspire me are bright colors, shoes, styles/art/music from the 70s and 80s and pictures I take from my own life of family and friends.

How have you found belonging during your time at BYU?

I definitely found belonging in the Art Department while working with my classmates and teachers. It is really fun to be with people who love to look at, talk about and appreciate art as much as I do.

What’s your go-to study snack?

When working on projects, I like to grab handfuls of tortilla chips every so often or a nice bowl of cereal.

What was your favorite project you worked on as a student?

This is a hard question because I loved so many of my projects. One semester I took a mixed media class and the projects turned out really cool, colorful and cohesive. My favorites were making my own colorful disco ball and old-fashioned wooden TVs.

Who is your favorite artist and why?

Andy Warhol is such an iconic and popular artist, but he is my favorite. His work has guided so many of my projects, I love it so much! I love his use of bright colors and the objects/people he chooses to inspire his artwork. His “Campbell’s Soup Cans” series will forever be one of my favorites.

What are your aspirations/goals for the future?

In the future, I hope to be a practicing art teacher, meaning that I will keep making art while teaching it. My biggest aspiration is to be an inspiring and encouraging art teacher. I hope that I can help students to create artwork that they love and that expresses who they are.
