THE BLACK STORIES PROJECT | MADISON CASAGRANDA

In the Black Stories project, Madison Casagranda addresses the current issues of systemic inequality by acknowledging and grappling with the history behind them. She photographs members of Utah’s Black community with a wet plate collodion tintype, which was used to document much of the Civil War. The exhibit includes the portraits and voices of those affected by systemic racism today and stands as an effort towards opening the conversation, understanding the past, and changing the future narrative of our history.

“In a state where the Black population is less than two percent and a dominant religious culture presents a unique and complicated narrative of the past and present, my goal is to help people realize that the human experience ranges vastly. I hope for the day when we can all have more open minds, the willingness to confront uncomfortable truths, and a truer, more empathetic understanding of each other’s experiences,” Casagranda said.
